Hayden Panettiere, the actor whose career stretched from childhood roles to memorable performances in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, has died at 36. Panettiere was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 16. Emergency personnel attempted to provide medical assistance, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said their preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Her official cause of death has not been announced.
Her father, Alan "Skip" Panettiere, confirmed the news in a family statement remembering his daughter as an extraordinary presence who brought joy to her loved ones and audiences around the world. For horror fans, Panettiere will be especially remembered as Kirby Reed in Scream 4. Introduced as a quick-witted horror obsessive with an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre, Kirby became one of the film's most popular characters. Panettiere returned to the role more than a decade later in Scream VI, giving the apparent survivor a new life as an FBI agent investigating Ghostface killings.
Her careerbegan when she was a child. Panettiere later gained widespread recognition through films including Remember the Titans and television roles such as Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Her portrayal of Juliette earned her two Golden Globe nominations.
Panettiere had also spoken openly about addiction, postpartum depression, grief and her efforts to rebuild her life. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at age 28 from an enlarged heart and related complications.
Beyond acting, she was a vocal advocate for animal welfare, particularly the protection of dolphins and whales. PETA released an anti-captivity campaign she had been developing before her death, honoring a cause she had supported since she was a teenager.
Panettiere leaves behind her daughter, Kaya, as well as a body of work that reached across television, drama, comedy and horror. For Scream viewers, Kirby Reed remains a defining part of her legacy: fiercely intelligent, resilient and impossible to forget.
The investigation remains ongoing. This story will be updated when the Greenville County Coroner's Office releases an official cause of death.
