Nicholas Galitzine Is Sydney Sweeney’s Ichabod Crane in ‘Hollow’: The Cast, the Erotic Sleepy Hollow Pitch and Everything We Know
Sleepy Hollow has its new schoolmaster. Nicholas Galitzine, the Prince Charming of Cinderella , the royal heartthrob of Red, White & Royal Blue and, as of this summer, He-Man himself, is reportedly in final negotiations to play Ichabod Crane in Hollow , Sony's gothic reimagining of Washington Irving's 1820 ghost story. He would join Sydney Sweeney, who plays Katrina Van Tassel and is producing the film through her new company, and Off Campus breakout Belmont Cameli, who is already on board as Brom Bones. Deadline broke the news on Nov. 5, and it was quickly picked up by Collider, JoBlo and World of Reel.
On paper this is a casting story. In practice it is the moment Hollow became a real movie with a real love triangle, and the moment fans started arguing about whether anyone should be stepping into a role Johnny Depp made iconic for a generation. Below: everything confirmed about the project, who is making it, the track records that matter, how this Sleepy Hollow is pitched differently from every version before it, and what Sony is actually betting on.
The Details: What's Confirmed
Here is what the trades and the outlets following Deadline's report agree on:
- Title: Hollow , from Sony Pictures.
- Ichabod Crane: Nicholas Galitzine, reportedly in final negotiations (not yet a signed deal).
- Katrina Van Tassel: Sydney Sweeney, who also produces through her company Honey Trap.
- Brom Bones: Belmont Cameli, whose casting TheWrap reported on Sept. 24, 2026.
- Writer-director: Lindsey Anderson Beer ( Pet Sematary: Bloodlines ), adapting her own debut novel.
- The book: Beer's novel was sold to Putnam, a Penguin Random House imprint, and is due in fall 2027, per JoBlo.
- Producers: Margot Robbie's LuckyChap, Beer's Lab Brew banner and Sweeney's Honey Trap. JoBlo notes this is Honey Trap's first film; the company has a first-look deal with Sony.
- Genre: a mystery and supernatural erotic thriller told from Katrina's point of view.
- Production: World of Reel reports cameras roll early next year.
- Release date: none announced.
The point-of-view detail is the whole ballgame. In Irving's story Katrina is barely a character at all: she is the heiress two men compete for, the prize that sets the plot in motion. Deadline's description, as cited by the French magazine Numéro, frames her instead as the center of "a dangerous mystery" rather than a romantic prize. Ichabod, the outsider who rides into town and gets in over his head, becomes the man she has to read correctly. That is a big swing, and it is the reason Galitzine's casting matters more than a typical supporting-role announcement.

Watch: The Director's Last Horror Movie
There is no footage from Hollow yet, and with production not starting until next year there won't be for a while. The best preview of what Beer does with a classic horror property is her last one, Paramount+'s Stephen King prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. Here is its official trailer:
Who's Behind It
Lindsey Anderson Beer, writer-director
Beer is the engine of this project: it is her novel, her script and her film. She wrote and executive produced Netflix's 2018 teen comedy Sierra Burgess Is a Loser , did uncredited writing on Chaos Walking , wrote and produced the Prime Video series The Magic Order , and is credited with additional literary material on this summer's Masters of the Universe , which means she has already worked on a movie starring her new Ichabod. Her feature directing debut was Pet Sematary: Bloodlines , which she co-wrote with Jeff Buhler. It premiered at Fantastic Fest on Sept. 23, 2023, and hit Paramount+ on Oct. 6, 2023.
Let's be straight about that film: critics did not love it. It sits at 24% on Rotten Tomatoes from 59 reviews and 31 on Metacritic. JoBlo reports it broke Paramount+ viewership records, though Paramount never released hard numbers we can check. So Beer arrives with a horror credit that audiences sampled in big numbers and reviewers shrugged at. Hollow is a chance to direct something that is entirely hers, rather than a prequel built around someone else's mythology, and that tends to bring out a filmmaker's best work.
Nicholas Galitzine, Ichabod Crane
Galitzine is best known for romance: Purple Hearts , Red, White & Royal Blue , and The Idea of You opposite Anne Hathaway. But horror fans have met him before. He played Timmy Andrews in Blumhouse's The Craft: Legacy (2020), had a main role as Elliott Lefevre in Netflix's 2019 horror series Chambers , and appeared in the 2017 TV remake of The Watcher in the Woods. He also played George Villiers in the period drama Mary & George , which is relevant here: it was a sexy, scheming costume drama, and that is close to the tone Hollow is selling.
His 2026 has been busy and mixed. He starred as He-Man in Amazon MGM's Masters of the Universe , released June 5, and he's currently in the war drama The Mosquito Bowl , which JoBlo notes is directed by Peter Berg.
Sydney Sweeney, Katrina Van Tassel and producer
Sweeney is the reason this movie exists at the studio level. Her psychological thriller The Housemaid , which opened Dec. 19, 2025, made about $400.5 million worldwide on a reported $35 million budget, and its sequel The Housemaid's Secret is dated for Dec. 17, 2027. Horror fans also know her from Neon's nun shocker Immaculate. Per World of Reel, her slate also includes a live-action Gundam , a Split Fiction adaptation with Jon M. Chu and Edgar Wright's Barbarella at Sony. Hollow is the first project from her own company, which makes it a statement about the kind of producer she wants to be.
Belmont Cameli, Brom Bones
Cameli broke out in Prime Video's Off Campus and has genre credit already: he was in Sony's video game adaptation Until Dawn. He also appeared in Warner Bros.' The Alto Knights. Brom is traditionally the town's swaggering rival, and the prime suspect behind the Headless Horseman in Irving's original. Making him a romantic heavyweight instead of a cartoon bully would sharpen the triangle considerably.

The Backstory: 200 Years of Riding Into Town
Irving published "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in 1820 in The Sketch Book , and it has been adapted roughly once a generation since. Disney made it half of 1949's The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Jeff Goldblum played Ichabod in a 1980 TV movie. Fox ran a modern-day action-horror Sleepy Hollow series starring Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie from 2013 to 2017.
The one everybody measures against is Tim Burton's. Paramount released Sleepy Hollow on Nov. 19, 1999, with Johnny Depp as a squeamish, scientific Ichabod, Christina Ricci as Katrina, Christopher Walken as the Hessian Horseman and Christopher Lee in a cameo. It cost a reported $70 to $100 million, grossed about $207 million worldwide and won the Oscar for Best Art Direction. It is a big reason Collider's headline frames Galitzine as Depp's "replacement," which is a little unfair: 27 years and a completely different take separate the two.
As for Hollow itself, the timeline is short. Sony picked up the project from Beer, Sweeney and LuckyChap in June 2026, which JoBlo says followed a competitive situation. Cameli was cast in September, and Galitzine's deal is now closing in November.
By the Numbers
- $207 million: worldwide gross of Burton's Sleepy Hollow (1999), the bar any version is compared to.
- $400.5 million: worldwide gross of Sweeney's The Housemaid , on a $35 million budget.
- About $114 million: worldwide gross of Galitzine's Masters of the Universe as of mid-July, against a reported $170 to $200 million budget. It opened to $29.3 million domestically and fell 70% in its second weekend.
- 24%: Rotten Tomatoes score for Beer's Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.
- Fall 2027: when Beer's source novel is due from Putnam.
Analysis: What Sony Is Really Betting On
Strip away the headless rider and Hollow is Sony following the most reliable mid-budget formula of the last two years: a gothic or psychological thriller with a sexy hook, a hot young cast and a female point of view. The Housemaid is the obvious proof, and it is Sweeney's proof. Robert Eggers' Nosferatu proved that audiences will show up for desire-soaked period horror. LuckyChap's own Saltburn showed how much heat a provocative, beautiful-people thriller can generate online. Hollow sits right at the intersection of all three.
Galitzine is the logical piece of that puzzle. He has a huge, loyal romance fanbase from streaming hits, and he looks the part in a period costume. Ichabod as a romantic lead is not even a stretch from Irving, whose schoolmaster was courting Katrina for her family's wealth. What changes is the angle: if the story is told through Katrina, then whether we trust Ichabod becomes the suspense. That is a role built for an actor who can be charming and slightly unreadable at the same time, which is exactly what Galitzine did in Mary & George.
The risk is just as clear. Masters of the Universe was supposed to make Galitzine a box office lead and it didn't; Variety floated it as a possible bomb of the year. Hollow takes some of that pressure off him, since Sweeney is the draw, but a lot of people will judge his career trajectory on whether this one works. Beer, meanwhile, has to prove her directing can match her ambition after a debut critics dismissed.
And then there's the question horror fans will actually care about: is this horror? Every description so far leans harder on "erotic thriller" and "mystery" than on scares. World of Reel's Jordan Ruimy summed up the marketing tone in one cheeky line, calling it a Sleepy Hollow movie "being sold as horny and spooky." The Horseman is one of American literature's great monsters. If Hollow treats him as set dressing for a love triangle, the genre crowd will notice. If it uses him the way Nosferatu used Orlok, as the dark embodiment of the desire the heroine is fighting, it could be the most interesting take on Irving in decades.
What We Still Don't Know
- Whether Galitzine's deal closes. "Final negotiations" usually means yes, but nothing is signed until Sony confirms.
- Who, or what, plays the Headless Horseman, and whether it's practical or digital.
- The rating. A film pitched as an erotic thriller practically demands an R.
- Whether the movie lands before or after the novel. With the book due fall 2027 and shooting early next year, a late 2027 or 2028 release seems possible but is unconfirmed.
- Theatrical or streaming. Sony usually means theaters, but nothing has been announced.
The Bottom Line
With Galitzine on board, Hollow now has its triangle: Sweeney's Katrina at the center, Cameli's Brom on one side and Galitzine's Ichabod on the other. It is a smart commercial package from a star-producer who just turned a $35 million thriller into a $400 million hit. Whether it is a smart horror movie depends on how much room Beer leaves for the thing in the woods. Telling the story from Katrina's side is the most promising change anyone has made to Sleepy Hollow in a long time. Now the movie has to remember to scare us.
Your turn: is Nicholas Galitzine the right Ichabod, or is the role still Johnny Depp's forever? And does Sleepy Hollow need to be horny, or just scary?
