Paul Bettany Joins Steven Yeun in Netflix’s Supernatural Horror ‘Pagans’: The Cast, the Team and Everything We Know
Netflix’s most intriguing unseen horror project just picked up a very strange neighbor. Paul Bettany has joined Steven Yeun in Pagans , the supernatural family series from Say Nothing creator Joshua Zetumer, as a charismatic stranger named Mag. Deadline broke the casting on Thursday, and it lands just as Bettany is finishing up with Marvel: TVLine notes that his Disney+ series VisionQuest wraps its run next week.
On paper, a charming stranger drifting into the life of a grieving family is one of horror’s oldest warning signs, and Bettany is the kind of actor who can make you enjoy the warning. Below: every confirmed detail, the people behind the show and how they’ve done in the genre, how a spec script set off a bidding war, why that Walking Dead connection is such a delicious bit of casting, and what all of this means for Netflix’s horror lineup.
Watch: No Footage Yet, So Here’s Why Yeun Matters
There is no Pagans trailer, teaser or first-look image yet, and given where production stands there won’t be for a while. In the meantime, here’s the official trailer for the last time Yeun stepped into mainstream horror, Jordan Peele’s Nope , in which he plays a former child star who has learned exactly the wrong lesson from his own trauma. Keep that performance in mind when you read the show’s description below.
The Details: Everything Confirmed
Pagans is a straight-to-series order at Netflix. It centers on Gus (Yeun), a father left to raise two kids alone after the death of his wife. His son is an ordinary kid. His daughter is not, and the relationship between father and daughter curdles, in the words of the casting report as relayed by Dark Horizons, into “something far more sinister.” Netflix’s own pitch for the tone is “equal parts emotional, horrifying, and humorous,” which is a promising mix if the show can hold all three at once.
Here’s the cast and who they play:
- Steven Yeun as Gus, the widowed father at the center of the story.
- Paul Bettany as Mag, the charismatic stranger. One outlet, TV Insider, says his role is still under wraps, but TVLine and CBR, both citing Deadline, name the character.
- Sabine Grace as Alice, Gus’s daughter and the apparent source of the trouble, in a breakout-sized part for a young newcomer.
- Logan Kim as Nate, Gus’s son.
- Marin Ireland as Janelle, a single mom.
- Intae Kim as Casey, Gus’s younger brother.
Zetumer is creator, showrunner and executive producer. He’s joined as EPs by Yeun and Christina Oh through their company Celadon Pictures, Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg through Goddard Textiles, plus Jonathan van Tulleken and Erica Kay. No episode count, director or premiere date has been announced. As of its October casting update, Netflix’s line on a release was simply that there isn’t one yet.

The ‘Walking Dead’ Twist Hiding in the Cast
Yeun spent six years and 73 episodes as Glenn Rhee on The Walking Dead , leaving in 2016. Logan Kim, meanwhile, plays Hershel Rhee on the spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City. Hershel is Glenn’s son. So Pagans casts the actor who plays Glenn’s boy as the son of the actor who played Glenn, giving the two a father-son story that universe never could. Fangoria and Dread Central both flagged the connection when the cast was announced in October. Deliberate or not, it’s a gift to anyone who has spent 16 years with these characters.
Who’s Behind It
Joshua Zetumer
This is the Hollywood fixer turned prestige creator. His film credits include the 2014 RoboCop remake and Patriots Day , plus uncredited rewrite work on Quantum of Solace. Then came Say Nothing , his nine-episode FX on Hulu adaptation of Patrick Radden Keefe’s book about the Troubles, which premiered on November 14, 2024, scored 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, won a Peabody and earned him a 2025 Emmy nomination for writing. Pagans looks like his first big swing at horror, and Say Nothing showed he knows how to write about the things families refuse to talk about.
Steven Yeun
Beyond Glenn, Yeun has quietly built one of the more interesting genre filmographies around. He led Joe Lynch’s action-horror Mayhem in 2017, and the following year he was the unnerving rich guy in Lee Chang-dong’s Burning , a mystery that won him several critics’ group awards. Nope grossed roughly $172 million worldwide on a $68 million budget with an 83% Rotten Tomatoes score. Outside the genre, he earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Minari , the first for an Asian American actor in that category, and won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Beef.
Paul Bettany
Bettany’s horror history is thin but memorable in a B-movie way: he played the archangel Michael in 2010’s Legion and the title vampire hunter in 2011’s Priest. His stronger calling card here is menace with manners, going back to Gangster No. 1 in 2000, and he drew an Emmy nomination in 2021 for WandaVision , a show that was itself about grief warping a home. CBR reports VisionQuest premiered on Disney+ on October 13.
Drew Goddard and Jonathan van Tulleken
Horror fans know Goddard. He wrote Cloverfield , which made $168 million on a $25 million budget, and directed The Cabin in the Woods , a 92% Rotten Tomatoes favorite that took under $70 million on a $30 million budget and has only grown in stature since. He also picked up an Oscar nomination for The Martian and worked on Lost , so he understands slow-burn TV mystery. Van Tulleken directed the first two episodes of Shōgun , the opening stretch of an 18-Emmy-winning season, which would make him a very interesting fit if Netflix gives him the cameras here. His exact role beyond EP hasn’t been announced.

Marin Ireland and the Rest
The secret weapon here may be Ireland, a genuine modern horror regular. She anchored 2020’s The Dark and the Wicked , earning a Fangoria Chainsaw nomination and a special mention at Sitges, and she has also turned up in The Empty Man , Birth/Rebirth and The Boogeyman. Notably, The Dark and the Wicked is also about a family being eaten alive by something it can’t name. Intae Kim’s credits include Succession and Best Medicine. Logan Kim is best known as Podcast in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
The Backstory: A Bidding War and a Long Build
This show has been hot since before anyone was attached. In September 2025, Deadline reported that Netflix landed Zetumer’s spec script after a competitive sale, with JoBlo relaying that somewhere between 15 and 18 studios, platforms and producers took part. That’s a remarkable number for an original supernatural idea with no IP behind it. Netflix gave it a straight-to-series order and placed it with the studio group led by Nne Ebong, who reports to Jinny Howe.
Deadline reported Yeun’s casting in August 2026. On October 21, Netflix confirmed the supporting cast through its Tudum site and said the series was entering production. A July report from EntertainmentNow, citing Production Weekly, reportedly had filming starting on October 26, 2026 and wrapping on April 13, 2027, though Netflix hasn’t confirmed those dates. Bettany’s addition arrives right on that timeline.
Analysis: What This Really Means
The obvious template is The Haunting of Hill House. Mike Flanagan’s 10-episode series hit Netflix on October 12, 2018, scored 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and proved that the platform’s audience will sit through ten hours of grief as long as something is standing in the corner. Midnight Mass , which arrived on September 24, 2021 with seven episodes and an 87% score, followed the same recipe and added a charismatic newcomer who rolls into a broken community and changes everything. Sound familiar? Bettany’s Mag is walking a road Hamish Linklater’s priest already paved, and it’s a very good road.
The film comparison is Hereditary , which turned a $10 million budget into more than $80 million worldwide with a 90% score by treating a child and a grieving parent as the real horror. That’s the danger and opportunity of Alice. “Creepy kid” is one of the most worn-out tropes in the genre, and the whole series rests on a young performer in what amounts to her first major TV role. The “something is wrong with my daughter” story lives or dies on whether the father’s fear feels like love gone bad rather than a jump-scare delivery system. Zetumer’s Say Nothing track record is the best reason for optimism there.
Netflix’s motive is easy to read, too. The streamer has just seen how hungry people are for this stuff: per Nielsen figures reported this week, FROM pulled in 1.65 billion minutes during October 19 to 25, the week its first three seasons landed on the service, good for No. 1 on the streaming chart. With Haunted Hotel also renewed for a third season, the platform clearly sees room for grown-up supernatural series. Paying up for an original spec, then stacking it with a Marvel name and an Oscar nominee, is the expensive version of that bet. Originals with no brand name behind them have to win on word of mouth, and this cast is how you buy the first look.
What to watch for: whether the humor Netflix keeps mentioning is real or just marketing. A family horror that can actually make you laugh between dread beats is rare, and it’s exactly what the Cabin in the Woods director and the guy from Nope should be able to pull off.
What We Still Don’t Know
- The release date. Nothing official. If the reported April 2027 wrap holds, late 2027 looks like the earliest plausible window, and EntertainmentNow guesses early 2028.
- Episode count and format. Netflix hasn’t said how long the season runs or whether this is built to continue.
- Who directs. No director has been named, though van Tulleken’s EP credit is worth watching.
- Who Mag really is. And what the title means. No plot details explain either one yet.
Bottom Line
Between Yeun, Bettany, Ireland, Goddard and the guy who wrote Say Nothing , Pagans now has one of the strongest benches of any horror series in production, and nobody outside the production has seen a frame of it. The real test will be whether it can make a scary-kid story feel new. Are you in on a Yeun and Bettany horror series on the cast alone, or does the creepy-kid premise make you nervous?
