‘Pendulum’ Trailer: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Returns to Horror in Aronofsky-Produced Cult Nightmare, and Everything We Know

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has not made a horror movie since he was a teenager playing one of the doomed kids in Halloween H20 back in 1998. That drought ends on New Year's Day. Vertical dropped the full official trailer for Pendulum on October 29, and it makes a strong case that the first big horror release of 2027 is going to be a slow, sun-bleached cult nightmare set in the New Mexico desert, from the man who wrote Black Swan and with Darren Aronofsky's company behind it.

The trailer is the loudest marketing push yet for a film that has been quietly assembling a serious pedigree for two years: Gordon-Levitt and Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor as a grieving married couple, two-time Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver as the spiritual healer who gets her hooks into one of them, plus Norman Reedus, Jena Malone and Anna Deavere Smith. Below you'll find both official videos, every confirmed detail, the people behind the camera and how their past genre work performed, the full development timeline, the box office math for a January horror launch, and what we think this movie needs to pull off.

And the shorter official teaser, which Vertical premiered on August 27:

Where the teaser leaned on mood and one nasty sound cue near the end, the new trailer shows its hand a little more: apparitions, visions, ritual work, and a lead character who can no longer tell whether the retreat is dangerous or whether his own grip on reality is slipping. It is a smart pitch. Cult horror lives or dies on that question, and the trailer asks it without answering it.

The Details: Everything Confirmed

  • Release: January 1, 2027, in theaters nationwide.
  • Distributor: Vertical, which acquired North American rights in May 2026.
  • Rating: R, for strong and bloody violent content, sexuality, drug use, nudity and language, per Dread Central.
  • Writer-director: Mark Heyman, making his feature directing debut.
  • Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Patrick), Phoebe Dynevor (Abigail), Jacki Weaver (Ella-Rose, the retreat's revered spiritual healer), Norman Reedus, Jena Malone and Anna Deavere Smith.
  • Producers: Darren Aronofsky (Protozoa Pictures), Jacob Jaffke (Motel Mojave) and Dave Caplan (C2 Motion Picture Group), with Élan Klein Jaffke, Ari Handel, Elizabeth Gesas, Will Greenfield and Heyman also credited across announcements.
  • Music: Ben Lovett.
  • Setting and shoot: New Mexico, where filming began in April 2025.

The setup, in our words: after a shared tragedy, Patrick and Abigail head to a remote new-age retreat hoping to heal. Abigail falls hard for Ella-Rose's unconventional methods. Patrick becomes convinced they have walked into a cult, while the movie keeps nudging the possibility that the problem is inside his own head. The marketing has kept the exact nature of the couple's loss under wraps, so we will too.

Who's Behind It

Mark Heyman, the writer finally stepping behind the camera

Heyman is a long-time Aronofsky collaborator who came up inside Protozoa. He was development director there and a co-producer on The Wrestler (2008) before writing Black Swan (2010), which earned him BAFTA and Writers Guild nominations for original screenplay. That film is still one of the great psychological horror crossovers of the century: made for about $13 million, it grossed roughly $332 million worldwide according to The Numbers, landed five Oscar nominations including Best Picture, and won Natalie Portman Best Actress.

He has touched mainstream horror too. Heyman shares screenplay credit with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods on Rob Savage's Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman (2023), which made about $82 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. Outside the genre he co-wrote The Skeleton Twins , a Sundance screenwriting winner, and created the period drama Strange Angel , which ran two seasons. In a statement released with the teaser, he called Pendulum "deeply personal and inspired by my family lore," and said shooting in New Mexico, where he grew up and where the real events took place, lifted every scene.

Darren Aronofsky's Protozoa

Aronofsky is producing rather than directing, but his fingerprints matter. The Requiem for a Dream , Black Swan and mother! filmmaker has built a career on stories where faith, obsession and the body collide, which is exactly the territory a grief-and-guru horror movie wants to live in. Having his name on the poster gives a first-time director's genre film instant credibility with the arthouse crowd.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

This is the hook for casual audiences. Gordon-Levitt's only previous horror credit is Jimmy, one of the teens in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). Since then he's done paranoid genre work in Brick , The Lookout , Inception and Looper , and most recently the 2024 thriller Killer Heat. A man who suspects everyone around him is lying is something he plays extremely well. Coming back to the genre almost three decades later is a genuinely fun storyline for the press tour.

Phoebe Dynevor and Jacki Weaver

Dynevor broke out as Daphne in the first two seasons of Bridgerton , then pivoted hard into darker adult material with the erotic thriller Fair Play (2023), Inheritance (2025) and Tommy Wirkola's shark thriller Thrash (2026). Pendulum is her first true horror lead, and the role of the believer is arguably the harder one.

Weaver might be the secret weapon. She is a two-time Oscar nominee for Animal Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook , and her genre résumé runs from Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) to Haunt (2013), Bird Box (2018) and the 2020 The Grudge. Anyone who saw her in Animal Kingdom knows how terrifying she can be while smiling sweetly. A warm, motherly cult leader is perfect casting.

The Backstory: Two Years From Announcement to Trailer

  • October 30, 2024: Variety and Deadline report Heyman will write and direct, with Aronofsky producing. The full trailer arrived almost exactly two years later.
  • March 2025: Gordon-Levitt and Dynevor sign on.
  • April 2025: Reedus and Weaver join, and cameras roll in New Mexico.
  • May 8, 2026: Vertical buys North American rights and dates it for January 1, 2027. Ben Lovett is announced as composer the same month, and the first image of the two leads follows.
  • August 27, 2026: The official teaser debuts.
  • October 6, 2026: A blood-red poster lands with the tagline "Surrender completely."
  • October 29, 2026: The full official trailer is released.

By the Numbers

There is no budget or tracking data public yet, so the useful numbers are the comparisons. New Year's horror is a real lane, and it can work for modest films. Blumhouse's Night Swim opened January 5, 2024, to about $11.8 million and finished near $54.8 million worldwide against a $15 million budget, per The Numbers. The lesson: audiences coming off the holidays will show up for a horror movie when there is nothing else scary in theaters.

Vertical itself just tested this exact slot. Its horror thriller We Bury the Dead opened January 2, 2026, on 1,172 screens and took in about $2.5 million over its opening weekend, per Box Office Mojo. For context, The Numbers' distributor charts show Vertical's top domestic grosser in any single year from 2016 to 2023 was Gotti at roughly $4.3 million. Vertical is a company that usually lives on digital and limited releases, so a nationwide New Year's Day launch with a recognizable star is one of its biggest theatrical swings.

The ceiling example is the Heyman connection. Black Swan 's $332 million worldwide is not a realistic target, but it shows how far elevated psychological horror can travel when word of mouth catches.

What This Really Means

Our read: Pendulum is a bet that "grief horror" still has gas, filtered through the cult subgenre that Midsommar made fashionable again. The difference is the setting. Instead of a Swedish commune, it is the very American wellness economy of crystals, breathwork and charismatic healers, which feels more current than ever and is a far more relatable trap. Most viewers have never been near a pagan festival. A lot of them know someone who has gone on a retreat and come back talking differently.

The release date is the boldest choice. January 1 is a Friday in 2027, so this gets a full three-day opening weekend on the holiday, with almost no horror competition. That is the Night Swim playbook. The risk is that January horror carries a reputation as a dumping ground, and a movie with this much prestige DNA could get lumped in with studio leftovers. Vertical's partner Peter Jarowey framed it differently, saying the team wants to ring in 2027 by "scaring the hell out of audiences." Confidence is the right posture. The trailer suggests a film that should be sold as an event, not filler.

Heyman's debut also matters for the Aronofsky pipeline. Protozoa has been a director's shop for decades, and launching a long-time collaborator as a horror filmmaker is the same move that has paid off for other producer-led companies building genre voices. If Pendulum lands, expect Heyman to be on every studio's shortlist for elevated horror, the same way Black Swan made him a go-to writer.

What We Still Don't Know

  • Runtime and budget have not been announced.
  • Norman Reedus, Jena Malone and Anna Deavere Smith's roles are still under wraps.
  • No festival premiere has been confirmed, and no reviews are out, which means the first critical reactions could come very close to release.
  • International distribution has not been announced.
  • How much of the story is supernatural and how much is psychological, which is exactly what the marketing wants you wondering.

The Bottom Line

Pendulum has the ingredients that make horror fans pay attention: a writer with a genuine psychological horror classic behind him, an Aronofsky stamp, a star returning to the genre after almost 30 years, and Jacki Weaver as a smiling guru. The trailer sells dread instead of jump scares, and New Year's Day gives it a clear runway. Whether a first-time director can turn a deeply personal story into a crowd-pleasing scare remains the open question.

So tell us: are you starting 2027 at a cult retreat with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, or does January horror still make you nervous?
