Halloween: The Game Secures Digital Release in New Zealand Despite Australian Ban

New Zealand horror fans will be able to visit Haddonfield after all.

IllFonic has confirmed that Halloween: The Game will receive a digital release in New Zealand, reversing an earlier announcement that suggested the title would be unavailable in both New Zealand and Australia. Physical editions are not currently planned for the New Zealand market.

The confusion began when Australia’s Classification Board refused to classify the game. IllFonic initially said the decision prevented it from selling physical or digital copies in both countries, even though New Zealand maintains a separate classification system.

IllFonic later explained that its physical distribution arrangements for Australia and New Zealand relied on the Australian Classification Board’s decision. When the Australian submission was refused, the publisher’s physical and digital products were initially removed from both markets. The company has since arranged for the game to be distributed digitally in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Xbox Store now lists the game for preorder at NZ$58.40, with an 18-and-over restriction and warnings for high-impact violence, high-impact drug use, in-game purchases, online interaction and chat. The listing confirms that the Xbox Series X|S edition has returned to the country’s digital marketplace ahead of its September 8, 2026 release.

Australia’s position has not changed. On August 14, the Classification Board formally confirmed that Halloween: The Game had received an RC, or Refused Classification, decision.

The board said the game contains illicit drug use connected to an incentive or reward because using the drug provides the player with a gameplay advantage. Material classified RC cannot legally be sold, advertised, hired or imported in Australia. The board’s official statement did not identify the substance or describe the specific gameplay mechanic involved.

An earlier automated International Age Rating Coalition assessment gave the game’s preorder content an Australian R18+ rating for high-impact violence and high-impact drug use. That assessment covered digitally distributed material, while the planned physical release required a separate examination by Australia’s Classification Board. The physical submission produced the refusal.

The distinction between Australia and New Zealand is important. New Zealand’s Classification Office makes its own decisions, and a game is considered banned locally only when it has been classified as objectionable. Such a classification makes it illegal to import, download, distribute or possess the game. An Australian refusal does not automatically impose the same prohibition in New Zealand.

Developed by IllFonic and co-published by Gun Interactive, Halloween: The Game is based on John Carpenter’s 1978 film. Its central multiplayer mode is a one-versus-four horror match in which one player controls Michael Myers while four others attempt to protect Haddonfield’s residents and survive. A standalone single-player story mode is also included.

The standard digital edition is scheduled for September 8 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Physical editions are scheduled to launch internationally on October 6, although New Zealand will remain a digital-only market for the time being.

The Australian release remains blocked unless the classification decision is overturned or the game is modified and successfully resubmitted.
